HVI Testing

The ICA Laboratory installed a new, state of the art, High Volume Instrumentation (HVI Spectrum) representing the very latest technology. This purchase was made possible by sponsorship from the British Cotton Growing Association. The instrument is capable of providing measurement of the following parameters:

  • Length and Length Uniformity
  • Micronaire
  • Strength and Elongation
  • Greyness and Yellowness

In additional the HVI is able to provide a calculation of short fibre content and maturity.

Nep Testing

The Laboratory has a nep testing module measuring the number of neps per gram of cotton.

Chemical Sugar Testing

The Laboratory has also set up a chemical sugar testing service based upon a requirement raised by the cotton merchants.

Trash Analyser

The Laboratory is equipped with a Shirley Analyser which measures the trash content by weight in a cotton sample. This testing method is most suitable for merchants and spinners who specify an exact trash content allowance for the shipment in their contract.

Pressley and Stelometer

The Laboratory continues to provide the Pressley and Stelometer testing service, which tests fibre strength, as there remains a demand, although diminishing, from traders and spinners to use this facility.

Sheffield Micronaire

Micronaire testing can be conducted on either the HVI or the Sheffield Micronaire Tester. Comparisons between the two instruments show that the results are correlated.

Cotton Moisture Testing

Cotton moisture testing is used to determine either the moisture regain value, or the moisture content, of cotton.
